Business owner comparing SEO pricing proposals from three agencies in 2026

SEO pricing in 2026 sits between $1,500 and $5,000 a month for most US small and mid-sized businesses, and enterprise work usually starts around $8,000. Ahrefs puts the average agency retainer at $3,209 a month and the average hourly rate at $111. One-off audits tend to cost $2,500 to $5,000. The fee itself tells you little. What counts is what ships each month.

Key Takeaways

  • Get every quote in pages, links and fixes per month. A fee with no quantities can’t be compared.
  • $1,500 a month can work for a local or low-competition business, as long as the scope is in writing.
  • Your real spend is the monthly fee times the minimum term, plus any setup fee.
  • SEO pays for itself once a few extra customers a month cover the fee at your margin.

Ask three SEO agencies for a quote and you’ll get three very different numbers. One says $900, another $2,500, and the third wants a call first. Few say what the money buys. So we’ve put our own price list next to the market data. Hold any quote against it, ours included.

What is the average SEO retainer in 2026?

The most useful public benchmark is Ahrefs’ survey of 439 SEO providers. Agencies average $3,209 a month, consultants $3,250 and freelancers about $1,349. Across all of them, the average lands at $2,917, and 78.2% bill on a monthly retainer.

Yet the most common band is just $501 to $1,000 a month. That’s a lot of SEO sold at a price that can’t cover much real work.

Clutch’s pricing data, updated September 2026, puts retainers at $2,000 to $20,000 a month and hourly rates mostly at $100 to $149.

Bear in mind the Ahrefs survey ran in 2024, before most agencies charged for AI search work like tracking ChatGPT mentions.

How do SEO pricing models compare?

Agencies charge for search engine optimization in four main ways, and each one can hide something.

ModelTypical price (US)Good forWhat it can hide
Monthly retainer$1,500 to $5,000+/monthOngoing growthHours and output, unless listed
Project$2,500 to $5,000 for audits; more for migrationsOne-off fixesWho does the work afterwards
Hourly$100 to $149/hourAdvising an in-house teamWhether anything gets done
Pay for resultsPer keyword or per leadRarely a good fitEasy, low-value targets

Retainers suit most businesses because rankings compound. The catch is paying a flat fee for undefined work. Try this: divide the fee by Ahrefs’ $111 average hourly rate. At that rate, $1,500 buys about 13 or 14 hours a month. If the proposal promises an audit, content, links and reporting inside that, ask how.

What does each SEO budget actually buy?

Here’s our published SEO pricing as of October 2026, in US dollars. Every plan has a three-month minimum and then goes month to month.

What $1,500, $3,000, $5,000 and $8,000 a month buys in SEO

Three things matter as much as the fee.

Total commitment. A $1,500 plan with a $1,000 setup fee and a three-month minimum is really a $5,500 decision. Sign for six months and we waive the setup fee, so you’d pay $9,000. Do this for every quote. A low fee with a 12-month lock-in can cost more than a higher one you can leave.

Content volume. Growth adds programmatic pages, useful if you have many locations or services. Full Funnel scales links and PR.

Who runs your ads. Paid media is in every plan. When separate agencies run SEO and Google Ads without talking, you can pay for clicks on searches you already rank for.

Is $1,500 a month enough for SEO?

Yes, for a single-location or low-competition business, as long as the quote spells out what you get. A plumber in one metro, a dental clinic or a niche B2B firm can grow on $1,500 if it pays for technical fixes, a steady run of pages and a few good links every month. Our local SEO services are built for that stage.

It won’t stretch far if you compete nationally, run a large online store or chase broad terms against funded rivals.

So where does $1,500 stop working? Search your main service keyword. If the top results are mostly national brands and directories, or you need more than 10 location or service pages to cover your market, look at the $3,000 tier. Past that point, pages and links do more than another blog post.

And if a $1,500 quote can’t say how many pages and links you’ll get next month, that’s too little money or too little accountability. Our breakdown of affordable SEO package mistakes shows how cheap plans quietly shrink.

Is SEO worth the cost for your business?

Work backwards. Divide the monthly fee by the gross profit on one new customer, and you have the extra customers SEO must win each month to break even.

Customers needed = monthly SEO fee ÷ (average sale × gross margin)

SEO break-even formula showing customers needed per month to cover the fee

Take a home services company with a $2,000 average job and a 50% margin. Each job brings in $1,000 of gross profit, so a $1,500 retainer needs 1.5 extra jobs a month. A $5,000 retainer needs five. With a $12,000 software contract, one customer covers almost any plan. Our SaaS SEO pricing guide runs that math, and our B2B SaaS SEO agency page shows how we work with software teams.

What red flags should you spot in an SEO quote?

These are the lines I’d push back on in any proposal:

  • “Guaranteed page-one rankings.” Google says plainly that nobody can guarantee a #1 ranking.
  • “Ongoing SEO optimization” with no count of pages, links or fixes.
  • “20 high-authority backlinks a month” with no example sites and no promise to replace links that disappear.
  • “12-month contract required” before you’ve seen any work.
  • “We’ll report on rankings and traffic” and nothing on leads, calls or sales.
  • Nothing about AI search. People now ask ChatGPT and Google’s AI Overviews for recommendations, so a 2026 plan should track whether you show up there. Our generative engine optimization services explain what that involves.

What else do buyers ask about SEO pricing?

How much does SEO cost per month for a small business?

Most US small businesses pay $1,500 to $3,000 a month for agency SEO in 2026, with multi-location or competitive firms paying more.

Why do SEO prices vary so much between agencies?

Scope, seniority and location. A $500 plan and a $5,000 plan rarely include the same pages, links or people.

Is it cheaper to pay for SEO by the hour?

Cheaper upfront, but it buys advice. Without an in-house team to act on it, a retainer that ships work is better value.

Is $1,500 a month enough for SEO?

Usually, for a local or low-competition business, if the deliverables are in the contract. National and e-commerce competition need more.

What is the average SEO retainer in 2026?

About $3,209 a month for agencies, according to Ahrefs. Clutch’s typical range is $2,000 to $20,000.

How should you set your SEO budget?

Start with your break-even number, not a survey average. Pick the lowest tier that matches your competition, and check the total commitment. For industry numbers, see our HVAC SEO cost breakdown, or browse our full SEO services.
