Want the short version of how to start a digital marketing agency in India? Pick one thing you’re good at and one type of business to sell it to. Register as a sole proprietor (an LLP only if there’s a partner) and fill in the free Udyam form. GST can wait till you’re getting close to ₹20 lakh a year, though plenty of people sign up sooner because business clients keep asking for a GSTIN. Most new agencies charge somewhere around ₹15k to ₹40k a month per service. Set aside ₹30k to ₹90k for six months of tools and paperwork. And the first clients? A paid pilot, some focused outreach, then referrals.
If you only read four lines
- Year one, go narrow. Agencies that do one thing well close deals faster and get away with higher fees.
- A proprietorship plus Udyam is enough to get going. Move to an LLP or private limited when a partner or your first employee joins.
- Billing a client in another state doesn’t force GST registration on a service business below ₹20 lakh.
- Overseas work can be a zero-rated export. Got a GSTIN? File the Letter of Undertaking (LUT) every April, or you’ll pay IGST upfront and spend months chasing a refund.
Most guides stop at “register, then find clients”. This one gets into GST on a ₹25,000 retainer, invoicing a client in Dallas, and pricing with zero case studies. For the non-India version, see how to start a digital marketing company.
Which Service Should a New Digital Marketing Agency Offer First?
One service, one industry. That’s Jahid’s advice from building Paradigm Media Networks in India for US, UK and UAE clients.
A dentist hearing from a “Meta ads for dental clinics” agency assumes it’s done this before. The “we do everything” agency gets compared on price.
It’s why so much of PMN’s work sits in HVAC marketing and moving companies. Live in one niche and you know what a lead should cost before the prospect asks.
Before committing, ask: do I have one result in this service? Can I reach 50 owners in this industry within a month? Can they afford ₹20,000 a month? Any no, pick again.
Narrow isn’t blind, though. Great Meta traffic hitting a slow site with no call tracking still looks like a flop.
Sole Proprietorship, LLP or Private Limited: Which Should You Choose?
| Structure | Compliance | Liability | Suits |
| Sole proprietorship | Lowest: income tax return, plus GST returns if registered | Personal, unlimited | Solo founders in year one |
| LLP | Annual LLP filings with the MCA | Limited to your contribution | Two or more partners |
| Private limited | Board meetings, statutory audit, ROC filings | Limited | Hiring, investors, big corporate clients |

Here’s the thing: most solo founders register way more than they need. A proprietorship does the job until someone joins as a partner, you put a person on payroll, or a contract gets big enough that your personal savings feel exposed. Talk to a CA before you file anything. Seriously.
Do You Actually Need GST Registration for a Digital Marketing Agency?
Not until turnover goes past ₹20 lakh in a financial year. In a few special category states, it’s ₹10 lakh.
Some guides say billing another state forces registration. Not for services: An IGST notification exempts inter-state suppliers of services up to the same limit. Digital marketing services generally carry 18% GST.
Do Udyam on day one. It’s free, online and based on self-declaration, and under the MSMED Act, buyers have to pay registered micro and small enterprises within 45 days.
How Do You Charge Foreign Clients From India?
Work for a client abroad is zero-rated when the client and place of supply are outside India and you’re paid in foreign currency, among a few other conditions.
Registered for GST? File the LUT on Form RFD-11 each financial year and invoice without IGST. One habit worth building early: save the FIRA your bank or payment platform sends, right next to the invoice it belongs to. Your CA will thank you in March.

What Does It Really Cost to Start a Digital Marketing Agency in India?
Ballpark numbers for a one-person setup run out of a spare room, over the first six months:
| Item | Six-month cost (₹) |
| GST + Udyam (DIY, or a CA does it) | 0 to 5,000 |
| Domain, hosting, a proper email address | 5,000 to 10,000 |
| Canva Pro | about 4,000 a year |
| SEO or ads tools (free tiers, one paid month) | 0 to 20,000 |
| A little ad spend to test your own offer | 10,000 to 30,000 |
| Your CA (GST returns, the books) | 9,000 to 18,000 |
| Roughly, all in | 30,000 to 90,000 |
Rent and groceries are extra. Quitting a job? Park six months of living costs aside, because the first retainer rarely lands in month one.
What Should a New Digital Marketing Agency Charge in India?
| Service | Domestic retainer | US, UK or UAE client |
| Meta ads | ₹15k to ₹40k/month (or 10 to 15% of spend) | $500 to $1,500/month |
| Google Ads | ₹15k to ₹40k/month | around $500 to $1,500/month |
| Local SEO | ₹15k to ₹35k/month | $400 to $1,200/month |
| Website | ₹30k to ₹1.5 lakh, one-off | $1,000 to $4,000, one-off |

Where Do the First 5 Clients for a Digital Marketing Agency Come From?
- Client one comes from people you know. Offer a 60-day paid pilot at a lower fee in return for a case study. No experience? This is your way in.
- Put the result on one page. What it looked like before, what it looks like now, and what you actually did.
- Two and three: cold outreach, done properly. Pick 50 businesses in your niche. Skip the pitch and send each a short audit pointing out three things they could fix. Most owners are already reading up on what to look for before hiring an agency, so you’re just showing your work early.
- Four and five usually come through other people. Every happy client knows another owner who needs help, so ask. Web developers who don’t touch marketing will send work your way too.
- Have a cheap first step. A fixed-price audit is an easier yes. AI search audits are a good fit right now; here’s how to add AI search audits to your service menu.
A word on overseas clients: they take longer to trust you, and that’s normal. A small paid audit plus a five-minute screen recording explaining it beats a 20-slide deck. Then follow up. Then follow up again.
What Should Your First 90 Days Look Like?
| Weeks | Focus | Done when |
| 1 to 2 | Pick niche and service, open a current account, file Udyam, GST if needed | One-page offer written |
| 3 to 4 | Simple website, sign a pilot, file LUT if billing overseas | Pilot client live |
| 5 to 8 | Contact 50 businesses, send 10 audits, post on LinkedIn weekly | Two or three paying clients |
| 9 to 12 | Deliver, report monthly, ask for referrals, write SOPs | Five clients, one published case study |
