Is GEO just SEO? For Google, mostly yes, and Google now says so in writing. Its guide to optimizing for generative AI search treats AEO and GEO as still SEO and lists llms.txt, content chunking and special AI schema as unnecessary. What genuinely changes sits outside Google. ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot often cite pages that don’t rank in Google’s top 10, so off-site reputation, AI crawler access and prompt-level tracking matter more. Pay for that work. Skip the file-format tricks.
Key Takeaways:
- For Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, GEO is SEO, per Google’s own documentation.
- Other assistants differ: only about 12% of URLs cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot rank in Google’s top 10.
- llms.txt shows no measurable link to AI citations. Don’t pay for it.
- The genuinely new work is narrow: prompt tracking, third-party mentions and AI crawler access.
You’ve sat through the pitch. A new acronym, a dashboard of “AI citations,” a line item for an llms.txt file, and a retainer priced as if search had been invented last year.
Then you open the GEO vs SEO Reddit threads, and half the replies call it a rebrand. Most of the other half are agencies selling it.
Both camps are partly right. For plain definitions, our breakdown of GEO vs AEO vs SEO covers the terms. This piece is about what’s worth paying for.
Is GEO Just SEO? Google’s Answer Is on the Record
For Google’s own AI features, the argument is settled. In May 2026 Google published guidance stating that optimizing for generative AI search is “still SEO.” AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on the same index and ranking systems, then fan out into related searches for supporting pages.
The guide also names tactics you can ignore for Google: llms.txt and other AI files, chunking pages, rewriting content for machines, special AI schema, and chasing inauthentic mentions.
What Google does ask for is familiar: crawlable, indexable pages, good page experience, and what it calls non-commodity content. A generic “7 tips” article was already weak in classic search. In an AI answer, it’s the page the model can summarise without ever citing you.
Jahid Hussain has made this point to home-service owners for a while: the schema, entity signals and content structure that earn a ChatGPT citation are the same ones that lift a business in Google Maps. Running them as two projects with two budgets mostly buys duplicated work.

What Actually Changes When ChatGPT or Perplexity Answers
Ahrefs’ study of AI search citation overlap ran 15,000 long-tail queries through Google, Bing and four AI assistants. On average, only about 12% of URLs cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot also ranked in Google’s top 10 for the same prompt. Perplexity overlapped far more, at roughly one citation in three. A page-one ranking helps. It doesn’t guarantee your brand gets named.
Four things genuinely change:
Measurement. A rank tracker can’t see inside an AI answer. You need real buyer prompts, run on a schedule across engines, logging whether you’re mentioned, cited and described accurately. This is honestly new work.
Off-site reputation. Assistants synthesise what others say about you: reviews, directories, comparison articles, forums, press. Consistent business details and genuine third-party mentions often move AI answers more than another blog post.
Crawler access. ChatGPT search depends on OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot, and Perplexity runs its own crawler. A robots.txt rule or CDN bot setting can block them while Googlebot passes straight through. It’s a common blind spot when one vendor builds the site and another manages security, and a proper technical SEO audit should now check every major AI crawler, not just Google’s.
Volume. Conductor’s US benchmark put AI referrals at about 1% of website visits. That’s a reason to measure the channel carefully, not to move your whole search budget into it.

What Doesn’t Change: The Skeptics Are Mostly Right
If you’re asking GEO vs SEO: what’s the difference in day-to-day work, it’s smaller than most pitch decks suggest.
| Work | Same for SEO and GEO? | What that means |
| Crawlable, indexable, fast pages | Same | Nothing gets cited if it can’t be fetched |
| Clear answers near the top of a page | Same | Helps readers, snippets and AI answers alike |
| Original expertise, data and opinion | Same, weighted harder | Commodity content gets summarised, not cited |
| Structured data | Same | Useful for rich results; no special AI schema exists |
| Links and brand mentions | Overlapping | Mentions carry more weight with assistants |
| AI crawler permissions | Partly new | OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot need allowing |
| Reporting | New | Prompt tracking across several engines |
| llms.txt | Not needed | No measured effect on citations |
Six of those eight rows are work a competent SEO team should already be doing. That’s the honest ratio.

What Agencies Oversell
llms.txt. SE Ranking’s analysis of roughly 300,000 domains found no correlation between having the file and being cited by LLMs. Removing it as a variable actually made their model more accurate. Google says you don’t need it. It can help AI coding agents navigate developer docs, a real but narrow use that takes an afternoon. If it’s a headline deliverable on a proposal, ask what else there is filler.
Chunking and “AI rewrites.” Google says its systems handle multiple topics on one page. Rewriting a site into stilted Q&A blocks usually makes it worse for the humans who buy from you.
Citation dashboards with nothing underneath. AI answers vary by run, location and model version. A chart with no prompts, dates or full responses behind it proves very little.
Guaranteed AI rankings. Nobody controls what an LLM outputs. A guarantee is a sales tactic, not a method.
Manufactured mentions. Seeding Reddit threads or buying listicle placements is the old link-scheme playbook with a new label. Google’s guide says inauthentic mentions help less than they seem, and communities tend to spot and ban them.
So are most GEO agencies rebranded SEO agencies, as so many GEO vs SEO Reddit threads claim? Many are, and that isn’t automatically bad. An SEO team that added prompt tracking and AI crawler audits is doing GEO properly. The problem is one that renamed its package and raised the price without adding either. Our guide to choosing a GEO agency goes deeper on vetting.

Where AEO Fits in the Naming Fight
Is AEO real? As a label, it’s older than GEO. AEO grew up around featured snippets and voice answers; GEO came from a 2023 Princeton and Georgia Tech research paper. In practice, both describe the same work: getting your brand into generated answers, accurately.
So is AEO real as a separate discipline needing its own retainer? No. As a handful of tasks layered onto good SEO? Yes. Judge the vendor on the work, not the acronym.
How to Buy AI Visibility Without Paying for Hype
The deeper problem with standalone GEO vendors is structural. AI visibility depends on a fast, crawlable website, pages with real expertise, third-party reputation, and demand created elsewhere, since people ask assistants about brands they’ve already seen in ads. A siloed GEO vendor controls none of those inputs. It can report on citations. It can’t change what produces them.
That’s the gap between a full-stack agency and a single-channel one. Paradigm runs SEO and GEO, performance marketing, website design and development, and creative strategy as one system (SEO, GEO & Ads, Engineered for the AI Era). The person reading your AI visibility report can fix the page, site speed or ad creative behind the problem, instead of filing a ticket with another vendor. That’s what an AI SEO agency that runs search, site and ads together should mean.

On a sales call, keep it concrete. Ask for one claimed improvement with the raw prompts, run dates and full responses. Ask what they’d change on your site in month one. If the first answer is llms.txt, you have your answer. Our GEO services build on an SEO foundation for exactly that reason.
Not sure which of this you need? Our no-hype AI visibility audit checks how ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews describe your brand, whether AI crawlers can reach you, and which fixes are plain SEO versus new work. Request your AI visibility audit or book a 30-minute call.
What We Can Show You, and What We Won’t Claim
For Moving Hub, a US moving and logistics company, we built 300 programmatic SEO pages. Within four months the site ranked for 600+ keywords, and it went from $0 to $100K+ a month.
That’s an SEO result, and we present it as one, not as proof of AI citations. It’s the foundation this article keeps returning to: pages search engines can crawl, understand and trust. A citation chart without that underneath is the least durable part of the picture.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is AEO real or just a buzzword?
AEO is a real label for real tasks, but not a discipline separate from SEO. It overlaps almost entirely with GEO, since both aim to get your brand into AI answers.
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. Google says optimizing for its AI features is still SEO, and AI answers depend on the same crawling, indexing and quality signals. GEO adds measurement and off-site work on top of SEO rather than replacing it.
What is the difference between GEO and SEO?
SEO aims to rank pages in search results, while GEO aims to get your brand mentioned or cited inside AI answers. Most of the underlying work is shared. The genuine differences are prompt-level tracking, AI crawler access and heavier weighting of third-party mentions.
Does llms.txt help with AI search visibility?
Current evidence says no. An SE Ranking study of roughly 300,000 domains found no correlation between llms.txt and AI citations, and Google says the file isn’t needed. It’s harmless to add, but not worth paying an agency for.
Are GEO agencies just rebranded SEO agencies?
Many are, which is only a problem if nothing changed but the name and price. A credible one adds prompt tracking, AI crawler checks and mention work to solid SEO, and can show raw prompts behind its results.
Conclusion
On Google, the skeptics win: GEO is SEO, and Google has said so in writing. Beyond Google, a few things genuinely change: how you measure, who gets to crawl you, and how much outside voices shape your answer. That work is real and checkable. llms.txt files and guaranteed citations are not. If a proposal can’t say which line items are ordinary SEO and which are new, it isn’t a GEO strategy yet.
