Small business owner comparing small business SEO packages priced at $500, $1,500 and $2,500 a month

Small business SEO packages mostly sell for $500 to $2,500 a month, and yes, $1,500 is usually enough if you have one location in a fairly normal local market. It pays for about 13 or 14 hours of work a month: a few good service pages, your Google Business Profile, technical fixes and some links. If you sell software, run an online store or want several cities at once, it won’t stretch far enough.

Key Takeaways

  • $1,500 buys roughly 13 or 14 hours a month. Hold every promise in a proposal up against that.
  • Google your service and city. Lots of local firms on page one is good news. Lots of Yelp and national chains aren’t.
  • At $500 a month you’re mostly paying for upkeep.
  • Judge month three on early signs, not revenue.

Three quotes in your inbox. $399, $1,500 and $3,200 a month, all saying roughly the same thing. Is the middle one enough to get you anywhere, or just $18,000 a year spent slowly? It depends on your market, and you can check yours in five minutes.

How much do small business SEO packages cost in 2026?

Most quotes land between $500 and $2,500 a month. When Ahrefs asked 439 SEO sellers what they charge, the most common answer was $501 to $1,000 (20.4% of them). Local SEO averaged $1,557, agencies $3,209. That survey mixes cheap freelancers with proper agencies, so I wouldn’t lean hard on any one average.

The more useful number is the $111 average hourly rate. Divide a monthly fee by 111 and you know roughly how many hours someone is spending on you.

Alt text: Hours of work bought by affordable SEO packages at $500, $1,500 and $2,500 a month

What does $500 a month of SEO get you?

About four and a half hours. Someone writes the report and gets on a call with you, so maybe three hours of real work are left. That keeps your Business Profile current. It won’t pay for one properly researched service page, let alone a link from a real local website.

I’d only go this cheap if your site already ranks and just needs watching, or your competitors’ websites look like they were built in 2012. Anywhere else, $500 cuts corners on exactly what gets you ranked. The usual traps are in affordable SEO package mistakes.

Is $1,500 a month enough for SEO?

For one location in a normal local market, usually yes. For SaaS, an online store or several cities, usually no. What matters is who’s already on page one.

Check it yourself. In a private browser window, search your main service and city, something like “emergency plumber Tampa”. Scroll past the ads and the map, then count the ten normal results.

  • Six or more local businesses like yours? $1,500 can work. Better pages, more reviews and a fast site will beat them.
  • Three to five? Still doable, but give it six to nine months and start with your two best-paying services.
  • Two or fewer, with the rest Yelp, Angi and national chains? $1,500 won’t crack that search. Go after service-plus-neighborhood searches, or budget nearer $3,500.

Multiple locations hit the wall first. Each branch needs its own profile, page and reviews, so $1,500 over three cities is the $500 problem three times. Our local SEO pricing guide works out what 1 to 50 locations really cost. SaaS rivals publish comparison pages faster than 13 hours can match. Our SaaS SEO pricing guide covers that budget.

What should a $1,500 SEO package deliver in 90 days?

About 40 hours over three months, and the order matters.

  1. Month one: call and form tracking so leads get counted, a tidied Business Profile, the technical SEO problems blocking Google fixed, and a plan for which search each page should win.
  2. Month two: three to five service and area pages written or rebuilt, directory listings cleaned up, and an easy way to ask customers for reviews. That’s most of what good local SEO services come down to.
  3. Month three: two to four articles answering what customers really ask, first local links from suppliers or trade groups, and a report on calls and form fills, not just rankings.
Realistic 90-day plan for small business SEO packages at $1,500 a month

At day 90, look for early signs: more people seeing you in search, more calls from your profile, smaller searches creeping up. Google itself says SEO usually takes four months to a year to pay off.

For comparison, our Search plan is $1,500 a month: 12 blog posts, 4 service pages, 4 content refreshes, 6 links from DR40+ sites, weekly checks on 75 AI prompts and a monthly report. Three months minimum, then month to month. Put any $1,500 quote next to that and see what’s missing.

How much should a small business spend on SEO?

Start from what a customer’s worth, not a percentage you read somewhere. A plumber with a $450 average job keeps about half, so $225 a job. Covering $1,500 a month takes about seven extra jobs. If one in three inquiries books, that’s around 20 more inquiries a month.

Could Google realistically send you 20 more? Your current call volume and Search Console numbers will tell you. If not, start with fewer services. Our SEO ROI calculator runs this with your numbers.

Six months at $1,500 is $9,000. Our average SEO retainer piece covers which terms to push back on.

How do you tell affordable SEO packages from cheap ones?

A good budget package does less but tells you exactly what. A cheap one copies a $3,000 plan’s list and does a quarter of it. Things I’d look for:

  • “On-page optimization” with no page count.
  • Links promised, sites never named.
  • An audit nobody acts on.
  • Rankings in the report, but no calls.
  • A guaranteed #1 spot. No one can promise that.
  • A year’s lock-in before you’ve seen any work.

If you run Google Ads too, make sure your SEO and ads people share keyword data, or you’ll pay for clicks you’d get free. And ask whether they check if ChatGPT mentions you when someone asks who to hire. Our generative engine optimization services page explains why. More questions are in how to choose an SEO company.

What else do small business owners ask about SEO packages?

How much do SEO packages cost for a small business?

Usually $500 to $2,500 a month. Ahrefs puts local SEO around $1,557. Several locations or an online store, plan on $2,500 or more.

Are cheap SEO packages worth it?

Only for upkeep or a very quiet market. Below $500 there’s no time for new pages or proper links.

How long does SEO take for a small business?

Early signs around three months, more leads between four and twelve. Busy markets take longer.

Is $1,500 a month enough for local SEO with two or three locations?

Usually not. Each location needs its own profile, page and reviews, so ask for a price per location.

Why isn’t my $500 a month SEO package working?

Four or five hours mostly goes on reports and tweaks. Ask what got done last quarter. That list usually explains it.

So should you spend $1,500 a month on SEO?

Three questions. Can you beat the businesses on page one? Do the numbers work for what a job’s worth? Will the agency put next month’s work in writing? Yes to all three, and $1,500 is money well spent. Our SEO pricing guide covers other budgets.
