SEO audit cost can be anything from zero for a tool scan to $20,000 or more for an enterprise site. Most small and mid-sized businesses pay between $500 and $5,000. $500 usually gets a freelancer checking the basics of a small site. $5,000 gets an agency covering technical health, content, links, competitors, tracking and AI search, with fixes put in order.
Key takeaways
- Divide a quote by the hourly rate to see roughly how many hours you’re buying.
- Tools find errors, but a person has to say which ones cost you money.
- Size the audit to the budget it’ll steer.
- Plan for the fixes, which usually cost more than the audit.
An agency quotes $4,500 for an SEO audit. A freelancer says $300. A free tool has already scored your site 62 and listed 214 issues. Same name on all three, so compare what each leaves you with.
How much does an SEO audit cost in 2026?
| Audit type | Typical cost | Site size it suits | Hours of human work |
| Automated tool scan | $0 (or a tool subscription) | Any | None |
| Freelancer or starter audit | $300 to $1,000 | Under 100 pages | 4 to 10 |
| Professional audit | $1,000 to $3,000 | 100 to 1,000 pages | 10 to 30 |
| Full agency audit | $3,000 to $7,500 | 500 to 5,000 pages | 30 to 75 |
| Enterprise audit | $10,000 to $20,000+ | 10,000+ pages or several markets | 100+ |
These ranges come from what agencies publish, checked against Ahrefs’ poll of 439 SEO providers, where 21.2% of providers charge $2,501 to $5,000 per project. The hours are my own rough estimates.
How many hours does each price buy?
Ahrefs has freelancers averaging $71.59 an hour, agencies $98.90 and consultants $171.18. So $500 to a freelancer is about 7 hours, and $5,000 to an agency is closer to 50.
Seven hours covers a 60-page site, not Search Console analysis and three competitors on top. If a $500 quote promises all that, I’d ask where the other 40 hours are coming from. Our SEO pricing guide shows how audits fit a wider budget.
What do free, $500 and $5,000 SEO audits include?
| What you get | Free tool scan | ~$500 audit | ~$5,000 audit |
| Deliverable | Score and issue list | Annotated spreadsheet | Report, roadmap, walkthrough call |
| Technical crawl | Automated | Checked by a person | Checked, plus rendering and logs |
| Search Console and analytics | No | Sometimes | Yes |
| Content review | Missing tags only | On-page basics | Every page: keep, merge, rewrite or cut |
| Backlinks | Totals | Basic check | Lost links and gaps against competitors |
| AI search visibility | No | No | Crawler access, brand and prompt checks |
| Priorities | Severity labels | Short fix list | Ranked by impact and effort |

What does a free SEO audit catch?
Things that are broken, like 404 pages, redirect chains and missing titles. The trouble is it can’t tell what matters, so 40 missing meta descriptions get flagged as loudly as a noindex tag on your best service page. Only the noindex tag is losing you leads.
What does a $500 audit get you?
For a site under about 100 pages that isn’t in trouble, it’s often all you need. Some cheap audits are just the free tool’s export with a logo on the front, though, so ask for a sample first.
When is a $5,000 audit worth it?
When a wrong call would be expensive: 500+ URLs, a traffic drop nobody can explain, a redesign coming up, or $18,000 a year about to go into SEO.
What does a real SEO audit deliverable look like?
Here’s one invented but common problem, as each audit reports it.
The free scan says: “Duplicate content: 38 pages. Severity: Warning.”
A paid roadmap entry says:
| Field | Entry |
| Finding | 38 location pages share about 90% of their copy. Google has indexed 11. |
| Evidence | 27 URLs show “Crawled, currently not indexed” in Search Console. |
| Fix | Rewrite the 27 pages with each branch’s own staff, reviews and photos. |
| Effort | About 20 hours of writing |
| Priority | 2 of 14 |
| How to measure | Indexed pages and impressions, six weeks on |

The scan found the same problem. It just couldn’t say what it’s costing you or how you’d know the fix worked, which is most of what a paid audit is for.
What drives SEO audit costs up or down?
- URL count. Filters and URL parameters can turn a 200-product store into 20,000 crawlable URLs.
- Platform. JavaScript-heavy sites need rendering checks, which take time.
- Markets. Each extra language or country adds data and hreflang checks.
- Scope. A technical SEO audit skips content and backlinks, so it’s cheaper. If indexing is the real problem, our technical SEO services start there.
Tools don’t move the price much. Screaming Frog crawls 500 URLs free and costs £199 a year beyond that. The money goes on whoever reads the crawl.
Which red flags should make you walk away?
Anyone who promises rankings, since Google is clear that no one can guarantee a #1 spot. Same goes for anyone who won’t put the scope in writing.
Do you need a free or a paid SEO audit?
Roughly how I’d decide:
- Under 50 pages, traffic fine, you do your own SEO: a free crawl and Jahid’s free SEO and AI search audit checklist will do.
- 50 to 500 pages, about to hire help: budget $500 to $1,500, or fold the audit into month one.
- Traffic drop, redesign, 1,000+ URLs or $3,000+ a month on SEO: get the full audit. Moving platforms? Use our website migration SEO checklist too.

Check the proportions too. A year at $1,500 a month is $18,000, so a $1,500 audit is about 8% of it and decides where the rest goes.
Not sure which camp you’re in? Send us your URL and what’s changed lately. If a free scan will do, we’ll tell you. Book a paid SEO audit or book a 30-minute call.
Is $1,500 a month enough for SEO after the audit?
That depends on what the audit turns up. At roughly $111 an hour, $1,500 buys 13 or 14 hours a month. Fifteen hours of urgent fixes get done in month one. Sixty hours means four months of cleanup before anything new gets built. For fix costs, see SEO pricing benchmarks, website optimization cost and, if you’ve got more than one branch, local SEO pricing.
Why does an audit that ignores ads and AI search cost more?
Because it sees part of the picture. An SEO-only audit rarely opens your Google Ads search-term report, your best record of which searches turn into customers, or spots ad landing pages competing with your service pages.
AI search is the newer gap. OpenAI says sites that block its OAI-SearchBot won’t show up in ChatGPT search answers, and that block is often an old firewall setting. Our generative engine optimization services cover this, and the free AI visibility checker gives a quick read. Split the work across three vendors and you’ll get three fix lists that don’t agree.
What else do buyers ask about SEO audit cost?
Is a free SEO audit worth it?
As a first look, yes, but it can’t see your Search Console data or rank fixes by impact.
How long does an SEO audit take?
A few days for a small site, and usually two to four weeks for a mid-sized one.
Does an SEO audit include fixing the problems?
Usually not, so ask, and get the fixes priced separately.
Can ChatGPT do an SEO audit?
It can spot obvious problems on a pasted page, but it can’t see your crawl, indexing or traffic.
How often should you get an SEO audit?
Once a year for most sites, plus after a redesign, migration or sudden traffic drop.
How do you pick the right SEO audit budget?
Size it from what it’ll steer, check the hours behind each quote and keep money back for fixes. Our guide on how to choose an SEO company covers the rest of the vetting.
