A SaaS SEO audit tells you whether Google and AI assistants can find, rank and cite your site, and whether those visits become demos you can trace. Ours runs 60 checks across six areas: technical, on-page, content, authority, AI search readiness and tracking. Each is pass or fail, ranked P1 (fix now) to P3.
Key Takeaways:
- Crawling and rendering come first. A page Google can’t see won’t be saved by better titles.
- Ranking on page one doesn’t get you into ChatGPT’s shortlist.
- Your failed P1 count answers the in-house or agency question.
You probably already suspect your SEO is underperforming. The hard part is knowing why. It might be a rendering bug a developer fixes before lunch, or a G2 profile nobody’s touched since 2023. We run this list in a client’s first month to find out which.
What a SaaS SEO Audit Checks (and What Generic Audits Miss)
Most audits ask one thing: can Google crawl and rank the site? Fine, but SaaS buyers now ask ChatGPT for a shortlist first, and your pricing and comparison pages need to turn up there. Then those demos have to reach your CRM tagged correctly, or nobody can prove it worked.
AI assistants lean on review sites, roundups and consistent descriptions of your company (more on how SaaS brands earn AI search citations). Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews beyond being indexed and snippet-eligible. Sections 1 and 2 cover both.
Before You Start: What You Need
Search Console, GA4, a crawler (Screaming Frog’s free version stops at 500 URLs), a schema validator and an hour with your CRM owner. Our SEO tools comparison has free options. Go row by row. P1 costs you rankings or pipeline today, P2 slows growth, P3 is tidy-up. Auditing a non-SaaS site? Jahid’s SEO and AI search audit checklist is the broader version.

1. Technical and Crawlability (Fix This First)
| # | Check | Passes when | Priority |
| 1 | Index coverage | Money pages show “Indexed” | P1 |
| 2 | Rendering | Copy and links are in the raw HTML | P1 |
| 3 | App subdomains | app, login and staging hosts are blocked | P1 |
| 4 | robots.txt | No marketing path blocked by accident | P1 |
| 5 | Canonicals | Each page points to itself, not a redirect | P1 |
| 6 | XML sitemap | Only live, canonical URLs listed | P2 |
| 7 | Redirects | One hop, no chains | P2 |
| 8 | Single host | Every variant 301s to one version | P2 |
| 9 | Core Web Vitals | Mobile templates pass in Search Console | P2 |
| 10 | Docs | Indexable and linked from the main site | P3 |
Got one day? Spend it on check 2. Some SaaS sites send an almost empty HTML page and build the rest with JavaScript. Google’s docs admit not all bots can run JavaScript, and many AI crawlers can’t. Every failed check in this table has a ticket-ready fix in our guide to technical SEO for SaaS websites.
2. On-Page and Structured Data
| # | Check | Passes when | Priority |
| 11 | Low-CTR pages | Top-5 pages with weak CTR retitled | P1 |
| 12 | Organization schema | sameAs links to G2, LinkedIn and Crunchbase | P1 |
| 13 | Title tags | Unique and under 60 characters | P2 |
| 14 | Feature pages | Benefit stated in the first 100 words | P2 |
| 15 | Money-page links | Three or more relevant posts link in | P2 |
| 16 | Orphans | No indexable page without an internal link | P2 |
| 17 | Product schema | SoftwareApplication markup validates | P2 |
| 18 | H1 | One per page, matching intent | P3 |
| 19 | Blog schema | Article and Breadcrumb markup validate | P3 |
| 20 | Images | Real alt text, compressed files | P3 |
People skip check 12 because the schema feels like an admin. Those sameAs links tell AI tools your site, G2 listing and LinkedIn page are one company.
3. Content and Keyword Coverage
| # | Check | Passes when | Priority |
| 21 | Striking distance | Positions 8 to 20 have a refresh date | P1 |
| 22 | Cannibalization | One page per search intent | P1 |
| 23 | Bottom-funnel pages | “Alternative” and “vs” pages for top three rivals | P1 |
| 24 | Integration pages | One page for each major integration | P2 |
| 25 | Use-case pages | Covered for your main roles and industries | P2 |
| 26 | Answer-first | Main question answered in two sentences | P2 |
| 27 | Intent match | Format matches what already ranks | P2 |
| 28 | Freshness | No old screenshots or old prices | P2 |
| 29 | Original evidence | Pillar pages include your own data | P2 |
| 30 | Author pages | Bylines link to real credentials | P3 |
The money is usually in check 23. Someone typing “HubSpot alternative” already has a budget. Without that page, an affiliate site answers for you. The SaaS SEO guide shows where it fits.
4. Authority and Review Footprint
| # | Check | Passes when | Priority |
| 31 | Review profiles | G2 and Capterra claimed and up to date | P1 |
| 32 | Roundup inclusion | Named in three of the top ten category roundups | P1 |
| 33 | Review recency | At least one review in the last 90 days | P2 |
| 34 | Review volume | Close to your top three competitors | P2 |
| 35 | Referring domains | Flat or rising over 12 months | P2 |
| 36 | Link gap | Sites linking only to rivals are listed | P2 |
| 37 | Anchor text | Mostly branded | P3 |
| 38 | Toxic links | Disavow kept for obvious link schemes | P3 |
| 39 | Community mentions | Your brand comes up in relevant subreddits | P3 |
| 40 | Digital PR | One earned mention a quarter | P3 |
Checks 31 to 34 probably matter more for ChatGPT than Google. For links, see our off-page SEO guide.
5. AI Search Readiness
| # | Check | Passes when | Priority |
| 41 | AI crawler access | robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot | P1 |
| 42 | CDN bot rules | Server logs show AI crawlers getting through | P1 |
| 43 | Entity consistency | Same description on site, LinkedIn, G2, Crunchbase | P1 |
| 44 | Category statement | Homepage says what you are and who it’s for | P1 |
| 45 | Public pricing | Pricing is readable HTML, not gated | P1 |
| 46 | Prompt baseline | Ten buying prompts tested and logged | P1 |
| 47 | Cited sources | You know which pages AI tools cite | P2 |
| 48 | Comparison facts | Feature tables are text, not images | P2 |
| 49 | AI referral tracking | AI referrers have their own GA4 channel | P2 |
| 50 | Training opt-out | GPTBot and Google-Extended set on purpose | P3 |
Check 42 trips people up. Cloudflare started blocking AI crawlers by default in July 2025, so robots.txt can say “come in” while the CDN shuts the door. Look for OAI-SearchBot 403s in your logs. And blocking GPTBot only affects training, but OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot “will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.” More in our LLM SEO audit.

6. Conversion and Measurement
| # | Check | Passes when | Priority |
| 51 | Form tracking | Demo and trial forms fire GA4 key events | P1 |
| 52 | CRM attribution | Lead source reaches the opportunity | P1 |
| 53 | Pipeline reporting | Demos are reported by channel | P1 |
| 54 | Ownership | Every failed P1 has a name and a date | P1 |
| 55 | Money-page CTAs | Demo or trial button above the fold | P2 |
| 56 | Paid landing pages | Ad-only pages are noindexed | P2 |
| 57 | Search Console | Domain property linked to GA4 | P2 |
| 58 | Pricing page | Each plan has an obvious next step | P3 |
| 59 | Thank-you pages | Noindexed and out of the sitemap | P3 |
| 60 | Branded demand | Branded impressions tracked monthly | P3 |
Check 56 tells you whether search and paid actually talk. Ad pages built without SEO compete with organic ones and split the data. One team ran all three catches in week one.
Scoring the Audit: Fix In-House or Hire an Agency?
Count the failed P1s.
- 0 to 5: your own team can clear these in a sprint.
- 6 to 10: still in-house, as long as a developer and a writer get protected time.
- More than 10, or most of them in sections 4 and 5: this is ongoing work, and it’s where a B2B SaaS SEO agency or a generative engine optimization service is worth paying for.
The exception: if most failures are in sections 1 and 6, don’t hire anyone yet. Those fixes need your developers and your CRM admin.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a SaaS SEO audit?
A check of a SaaS site’s technical health, content, authority, AI visibility and tracking. A good one ends with ranked fixes, not a score.
How long does a SaaS SEO audit take?
Two to four days for a site under 500 URLs. Big docs sections stretch that.
How often should a SaaS company audit its SEO?
Quarterly, and after any migration or redesign, using a site migration SEO checklist for the post-launch checks. Glance at Search Console monthly.
Should we run the audit in-house or hire an agency?
Running it is easy. If over 10 P1s fail, or gaps are mostly reviews and AI visibility, you need longer-term help.
Does blocking GPTBot remove us from ChatGPT?
No. GPTBot is about training. OAI-SearchBot controls ChatGPT search, so check both.
Where to Start This Week
Do sections 1 and 5 first. It’s an afternoon’s work, and if either one fails, the rest of your effort is partly wasted. Score everything else after that.
