Marketing lead reviewing an SEO retainer contract and monthly benchmarks by business size

The average SEO retainer in 2026 is about $3,209 a month for agencies, going by Ahrefs’ survey of 439 SEO providers. First Page Sage, working from real agency contracts, puts the median higher, at $4,740. Your own number depends on the kind of business you run. Single-location local firms tend to land between $1,000 and $2,500 a month. Add locations and it’s more like $2,500 to $6,000. B2B SaaS usually sits at $4,000 to $10,000, and enterprise starts around $10,000. Honestly, though, the contract terms can matter more than the fee.

Key Takeaways:

  • Don’t benchmark against the overall average. It lumps dental clinics in with software companies.
  • Divide any retainer by $111. That’s roughly how many hours of work you’re buying.
  • Sort out the term, the exit clause and the deliverables before you argue about price.
  • What you’re really signing is the monthly fee times the minimum term, plus setup.

Your retainer’s up for renewal, or three new proposals don’t agree on anything. One says $1,200 a month, another $4,500, and both call it the going rate.

Annoyingly, both can be true. So here’s the data by business size, what each budget should buy, and the terms I’d fix before haggling.

What is the average SEO retainer in 2026?

Ahrefs surveyed 439 SEO providers. Agencies average $3,209 a month, consultants $3,250 and freelancers $1,348. Yet more people picked $501 to $1,000 than any other band, and about two in three (68.8%) charge $2,000 or under. Why the mismatch? Ahrefs asked freelancers everywhere, not just agencies. In India, 76% said $1,000 or less. Answers like that pull the middle down a lot.

First Page Sage’s October 2026 report used agency quotes and signed contracts instead. Its traditional SEO median is $4,740 for Q3 2026, up from $4,480 in early 2024.

Ahrefs shows what anyone selling SEO charges; First Page Sage shows what agencies with real teams sign. Hiring one of those? Plan nearer the higher figure.

How much is an SEO retainer per month by business size?

Our read by segment. Use it to sanity-check a quote; it isn’t one.

Average SEO retainer benchmarks by business size for local, multi-location, SaaS and enterprise in 2026

Local is cheapest because there’s less to do: Ahrefs puts it at $1,557 a month, or $1,819 from agencies. Our local SEO services are built around that stage.

Got several locations? Then the work goes up with each one you open. I’d push for a price per location. That way a fourth branch adds a line to the invoice instead of reopening the whole deal.

Software is pricier to rank because a whole committee buys it, and your comparison pages need to hold up when an engineer reads them. Our SaaS SEO pricing guide does the demo maths.

At enterprise level, most of the money goes on the stuff around SEO. Engineering queues. Legal sign-off. Five markets. When you look at an enterprise SEO and GEO retainer, find out who’s going to push fixes live. Anyone can write them up.

What should an SEO retainer include at each price?

Do the hours check first. Ahrefs found SEOs charge $111 an hour on average. At that rate, $1,500 gets you 13 or 14 hours a month, $3,000 about 27, $5,000 about 45. Now picture a $1,500 proposal promising an audit, weekly blogs, outreach and a monthly strategy call. Where are those hours coming from?

After that, I’d ignore the verbs and chase the numbers. How many pages, aimed at what searches? Links: how many, from where, and who replaces one that disappears? Will someone fix the technical issues, or just list them in a PDF? Does the report mention leads? Is anyone checking whether ChatGPT mentions you?

To give you something to measure against, here’s ours. Our Search plan is $1,500 a month and gets you 12 blogs, 4 money pages, 4 refreshes, 6 links from DR40+ sites, and weekly checks on 75 AI prompts. Hold any quote next to it. The bigger tiers are in our SEO packages comparison.

Should you pay an SEO retainer or a one-off project fee?

Here’s a simple test: does the work ever finish?

If it does, a project’s the better buy. Audits and migrations fit here, and so does a fix list your own developers will work through. If results come from work stacking up month after month, you want a retainer.

Or pay for an audit and get the fee knocked off the retainer if you stay on. Weighing hourly or pay-for-performance deals too? Our guide to SEO pricing models compares all four on risk and hidden costs.

Which SEO retainer contract terms should you negotiate?

People fight over the fee and skim the contract. I’d flip that, because the contract is the bit that kicks in when things go sideways.

Start with term length. A three-month minimum, then month to month, is fair. A year upfront, before you’ve seen any work, puts the risk on you. Quick sum: twelve months at $3,000 means you’ve signed up for $36,000. With us, the minimum is three months plus a $1,000 setup fee, and we drop that fee if you commit to six. So the same $3,000 plan is a $10,000 decision to start with.

After the minimum, 30 days’ notice is reasonable, plus a way out if deliverables are missed two months running.

Write deliverables in as numbers, with a credit or carry-over if they’re missed.

Own what you pay for: the content, the links, and admin access to Search Console, Analytics and your Business Profile.

Cap price rises, get scope changes in writing, and cross out any line promising rankings. Google itself says nobody can guarantee a #1 spot.

Does your SEO retainer need to cover AI search and ads too?

AI search, yes. People ask ChatGPT who to hire now, and ranking well doesn’t mean you’ll get named. Our generative engine optimization cost breakdown shows what that adds.

Ads are up to you. Just don’t let an SEO agency and an ads agency work blind to each other, or you’ll pay for clicks on searches you already rank for.

What else do buyers ask about SEO retainers?

How much is an SEO retainer per month?

Agencies average about $3,209 a month, per Ahrefs. Established agencies sit nearer $4,740, per First Page Sage. If you’re a local business, $1,000 to $2,500 is common.

What goes into a decent SEO retainer?

Monthly numbers for pages, links and fixes, plus reporting on leads. No numbers, nothing to check.

Is $500 a month enough for an SEO retainer?

From an agency, rarely. That’s four or five hours, and reporting eats most of it.

How long should an SEO retainer contract be?

Three to six months as a minimum is sensible. I wouldn’t sign for a year before seeing what they actually deliver.

Can I get out of an SEO retainer early?

Depends what you signed. Look at the notice period, any exit fee, and who keeps the content and accounts. Do it before signing, not after.

So is your SEO retainer priced fairly?

It is if the fee sits in your segment’s range, the hours and deliverables add up, and you can leave when work stops showing up. Our SEO pricing guide has the bigger picture, and the SEO ROI calculator shows when a plan pays off.

Want a retainer proposal you can compare line by line?
