SaaS buyer checking G2 reviews after an AI search shortlist

G2 reviews and AI search are tangled up now. Ask ChatGPT or Perplexity for a shortlist of tools and you’ll often see review sites and “best X” roundups behind the answer. Then the buyer clicks through to G2 anyway, to check. Your star rating is the least of it. What gets read is your category, your one-liner, your pricing and how old your newest review is. Fix those, then ask for reviews steadily.

Key Takeaways:

  • Buyers lean on review sites about as much as chatbots (which read review sites).
  • Wrong G2 category? Then you’re off the “best X” lists before anyone reads a review.
  • We’d take twenty recent reviews from the right buyers over two hundred from 2023.
  • Ask the lukewarm customers too.

Who last logged into your G2 account? Often it’s someone who left after launch. Meanwhile a buyer asks ChatGPT for tools in your category, gets five names and opens three on G2. If your page lists the wrong category, or pricing you changed in March, that buyer moves on. You’ll never hear about it. So let’s go profile by profile, no bought reviews.

How G2 Reviews and AI Search Feed Shortlists

G2’s July 2026 buyer research had review sites (38%) just ahead of AI chatbots (37%) as the top shortlist influence. An earlier G2 report flipped them. A tie, really. And G2 sells review services, so a pinch of salt.

Our AI search citation study of nearly 370,000 citations found directories like G2 and Capterra got just 2.2% of citations in 2025 recommendation answers, while 48.1% of answers cited a “best” or “top” list. Newer vendor data says that’s crept up. Even so, we think the bigger effect comes after the answer. Someone sees your name, gets curious, and opens your G2 page to make sure you’re legit. That’s third-party proof, which is one of the three signals AI engines check before naming a SaaS vendor.

Picture a tool that launched as “project management for agencies” and later rebranded as a “work OS.” G2 still says agencies, and so do 140 reviews. Ask ChatGPT about work management platforms and it’s missing, since nothing off its own site backs the new story. More reviews won’t fix it. New categories, a new description and asks aimed at customers using it the new way will.

The Profile Audit: G2, Capterra, TrustRadius and Reddit

Before you email a single customer, go through this. (It slots neatly into a SaaS SEO audit if one’s due.)

PlatformWhat engines and buyers readCheck firstCommon failure
G2Category, description, pricing, segment filters, review datesPrimary category matches what buyers ask forDescription left over from a rebrand
CapterraCategory listings, pricing summary, alternatives pagesPricing and free-trial fields match your siteProfile never claimed
TrustRadiusLong reviews, lots of use-case detailDo reviews mention your top use cases?Ten reviews, all from agencies
RedditUnprompted mentions in category threadsHow people describe you next to rivalsUndisclosed brand promotion

Try this, it takes five minutes. Grab the blurb from your homepage, G2, Capterra and LinkedIn and drop them in a Google Doc. Sounds like three products? Then an engine can’t describe you safely either. Our LLM entity SEO guide covers picking one.

Category-Matching Rules Most SaaS Teams Skip

Somebody picked your G2 category years ago. That choice still decides which “best X” pages you’re on.

  1. Use the boring label buyers type. Nobody asks ChatGPT for the best “customer experience platform” for a ten-person team. They ask for a help desk. SaaS keyword research settles arguments here.
  2. Go light on secondary categories. Each one invites new comparisons.
  3. Match your own site. If your SaaS SEO strategy targets “help desk,” G2 should say help desk too.
  4. Recheck after any repositioning.

A Review-Request Cadence That Keeps Profiles Fresh

G2 won’t accept reviews of experiences over two years old, and buyers skip stale ones. So the launch-week review drive? It quietly expires.

Rough maths. Want eight new G2 reviews a quarter? If maybe one in five people you ask follows through (a guess; use your own number once you have it), you’re sending about 40 asks a quarter. Call it 13 a month. And if most of the deals you want, say 60%, are mid-market, roughly 24 of those 40 go there.

Worked example of a SaaS review request cadence by customer segment

Timing-wise, we’d ask a month or two after onboarding, again around renewal, or the week a customer starts using a big new release.

Send it to the 6s and 7s as well. G2’s guidelines let it pull reviews gathered only from happy customers, and honestly, a three-star review with a decent reply from your team reads as more believable than another “Love it!!”

Disclosure Rules: What You Can and Can’t Offer

  • G2: $100 max per incentive. Those reviews get tagged “Incentivized,” and the reward can’t hinge on a good rating.
  • FTC: the 2024 fake reviews rule bans buying reviews, paying for positive ones and hiding that a reviewer works for you.
  • Reddit: if you work there, say so. Don’t plant threads.

Incentive campaigns? A small flat thank-you for everyone is fine. Go bigger and you get a month of short, generic, “Incentivized” praise that buyers see through. At Paradigm Media Networks we don’t buy reviews or pay to be passed off as an independent pick, and we talk clients out of it.

Reddit’s a wildcard, by the way. Semrush saw it drop from about 60% of ChatGPT responses to roughly 10% within weeks in 2025.

Why Review Work Fails in a Silo

Usually customer marketing owns reviews, SEO owns the site, PR chases roundups and paid runs G2 ads. Four teams, four descriptions, and to an engine that’s four companies. On Moving Hub we ran technical SEO, content, digital PR and GEO as one job: 2,460 AI citations in 90 days, referring domains up from 68 to 450. Our B2B SaaS SEO agency and generative engine optimization services run like that.

How to Tell If Review Work Moves AI Visibility

Jot down 15 to 20 things a buyer might actually type. “Best help desk for a small SaaS team.” “Us vs them.” Run them in ChatGPT and Perplexity a few times a month and keep a tally: were you named, and which review sites showed up as sources? (More on that in how to get mentioned by ChatGPT.)

Frequently Asked Questions

Do G2 reviews help SEO?

Indirectly. It ranks for your brand and gives AI engines outside words about you, but won’t lift your own rankings much.

Does ChatGPT use G2 reviews when recommending software?

When it searches the web, yes. It’s reading your category and how reviewers describe you, more than the stars.

Is G2 or Capterra better for AI visibility?

Both get cited. Start where your buyers already are, then make the other match.

Is Reddit worth it for SaaS AI visibility?

Turn up and help, sure. Just don’t build a strategy on it.

Can we offer gift cards for G2 reviews?

Yes, up to $100 on G2, as long as it isn’t tied to a good rating. Give everyone the same one.

Where to Start This Week

Profile first. Claim every listing, settle the description and category, then start asking a set number of customers each month.
